2024 VinFast IRONMAN World Championship Slot Allocation

Slots will be distributed and awarded proportionally within each gender.  If any VinFast IRONMAN World Championship slots roll down, those slots will stay within the same gender.

Why are the allocations for men’s and women’s slots different?
At the time that the dual World Championship locations was announced for 2023 and beyond, some male athletes had already qualified for Kona, 2023. Several of those athletes chose to defer their entry to the next men’s race in Kona, to be held in 2024. As a result, respecting the one-day capacity limit in Kona, the remaining available men’s Kona slots have been distributed among qualifying events for 2024.

Additional slot allocations for qualifying events occurring in 2024 will be updated at a later time.  Please check back for more details.

Age Group Slot Allocation: To earn a qualifying slot for the VinFast IRONMAN World Championship, an athlete must participate in one of the qualifying events listed below. Slots are awarded to the fastest athletes in each age group. 

To accept a slot, qualified athletes must claim their slot in-person at the Roll Down Ceremony, at the advertised time and location, as detailed in the respective event guide.  See details below.

Why are the allocations for men’s and women’s slots different? 
At the time that the dual World Championship locations was announced for 2023 and beyond, some male athletes had already qualified for Kona, 2023. Several of those athletes chose to defer their entry to the next men’s race in Kona, to be held in 2024. As a result, respecting the one-day capacity limit in Kona, the remaining available men’s Kona slots have been distributed among qualifying events for 2024. 

Age Group Slot Allocation – How it Works

“Age Group” refers to a grouping of athlete peers based on their gender and age range. For example, ‘Male 25-29’ is one Age Group, and ‘Female 25-29’ is another. Your Age Group is determined by your age as at December 31 of the year of the event. For example, if you are Male and turn 25 in 2024 then your Age Group Category for any race in 2024 is M25 – 29.  

The Slot Allocation Process:​ 

Before Race Day:​ 
  • Each Age Group with registered athletes is tentatively allocated one slot each (an “Initially Allocated Slot”)​ 
  • All other slots available for the race (the “Proportionally Allocated Slots”) are not allocated until race day​ 
On Race Day:​ 
  • If there are no starters in an Age Group, then that Age Group’s Initially Allocated Slot is removed and pooled with the Proportionally Allocated Slot​ 
  • The Proportionally Allocated Slots are then distributed among all Age Groups based on the number of starters in each Age Group. This allocation is based on the ratio of athletes in each Age Group across both the male and female categories, ie, the more athletes in an Age Group, the more slot allocations they receive 

After the Race:​ 

  • Before Roll Down:​ If there are no finishers in an Age Group that had one or more starters, then the Initially Allocated Slot for that Age Group is re-allocated, within the same gender, to the Age Group with the highest ratio of starters to slots​ 
  • During Roll Down:​ 
    If any slot allocated to an Age Group is unclaimed (after Roll Down for that Age Group is completed), then that unclaimed slot is re-allocated, within the same gender, to the Age Group with the highest ratio of starters to slots​ 

Other Information​: 
Only Age Group Athletes are eligible to receive Age Group World Championship Qualifying Slots. Athletes holding current Professional or Elite status with any ITU Member National Triathlon Governing Body, WTC’s Pro Membership program or having raced as an elite athlete in any international events during the calendar year, are not eligible for Age Group Slots. Athletes may not at the time of the event, nor at the time of the World Championship event they qualified for, hold Professional or Elite status. ​ 
 
Any change in an athlete’s status prior to any event participation or a qualified World Championship event must be disclosed to WTC immediately. Failure of the athlete to make such disclosure will be cause for disqualification from such event and may result in sanction from WTC Events.​

IRONMAN 70.3 Invitational Slots – How it Works

This qualification opportunity applies to female athletes only. 

Female athletes who finish top-5 in their age group at select IRONMAN 70.3 events will be emailed an invitation to accept a slot to the 2024 VinFast IRONMAN World Championship, in addition to the 2024 VinFast IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship slot that they may or may not have accepted during the on-site roll down ceremony. Note, these slots do not roll down should an eligible finisher decline their invitation.  

  • The email invitation will be issued within the week following the qualifying race. 
  • Payment will be required at the time the slot is accepted.  
  • This slot invitation offer expires within 7 days of its issue.

Women’s Top Age Group Ranked Invitational Slots – How it Works

This qualification opportunity applies to female athletes only. 

Female athletes who finished top of their age group for the 2023 year-end Age Group Rankings will be emailed an invitation to the 2024 VinFast IRONMAN World Championship. The finalized top-ranked will be confirmed by early January and email invites will be issued in February. 

If a slot is accepted, athletes must validate their slot by completing a full-distance IRONMAN or IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon between 1st January and 19th August, 2024. 

  • The finalized top-ranked will be confirmed by early January. 
  • The email invitation will be issued in February 2024. 
  • Payment will be required at the time the slot is accepted.  
  • This slot invitation offer expires within 7 days of its issue. 

2023 IRONMAN World Championship Age Group Champion Top-10 Invitational Slots – How it Works

This qualification opportunity applies to female athletes only.  

The top ten female finishers of each Age Group category at the 2023 VinFast IRONMAN World Championship, Kona, will be emailed an invitation to accept a slot to the 2024 VinFast IRONMAN World Championship. If a slot is accepted, athletes placed 2nd - 10th must validate their slot by completing a full-distance IRONMAN or IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon between 1st January and 19th August, 2024. Note, these slots do not roll down should an eligible finisher decline their invitation.

  • The email invitation will be issued by 31 October 2023. 
  • Payment will be required at the time the slot is accepted.  
  • This slot invitation offer expires within 7 days of its issue. 

Statement Regarding Russian And Belarusian Athlete Eligibility

In continuation with the policy put in place on March 2, 2022 and in line with the ongoing recommendations by the International Olympic Committee and World Triathlon regarding the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in international competition, all Russian and Belarusian athletes continue to be disallowed from participation in all IRONMAN World Championship and IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship events until further notice. In addition, age group athletes are not allowed to compete under the Russian or Belarusian flag at any IRONMAN or IRONMAN 70.3 events, and all Russian and Belarusian professional athletes are ineligible to compete at any IRONMAN or IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon events until further notice.
